Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been considered a health problem worldwide. Currently, the effective cure
for IBD is still lacking, thus potential substance is required for treatment colonic inflammation. Previously, our group
revealed that isoegomaketone (IK), an essential oil component of radiation-induced mutant Perilla frutescens, has
anti-inflammatory activity. However, the protective role of IK on colonic inflammation has not been studied. In this
study, we demonstrated that IK reduced the level of inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-
12p40, in Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse primary macrophages. In the DSS-induced colitis mice model,
IK ameliorated the severity of DSS-induced colitis in mice, as assessed by survival, body weight, and colonic damage.
These results suggest that IK has a preventive effect on colitis and can be a novel alternative therapy for treating
colitis.
