Hyo Sik Cho I am delighted about the Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art(WMOCA)’s hosting of “Jean Jullien: Still, There,” an exhibition on Jean Jullien, a French artist who is active Director, worldwide. Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art The exhibition features new works that were not part of the exhibition, “Jean Jullien: Then, There,” that was held at DDP and spotlights the sculptures of Nico Jullien, the artist’s brother, with whom he regularly exchanges inspiration. We designed the entrance and indoor spaces to look like one massive
artwork, which we hope will make the exhibition’s content more enjoyable and easier to absorb. I hope that visitors find something in Jullien’s art, which gives a unique, witty voice to social issues in a diary entry-like style, that resonates with them and experience what only an unconventional artistic world can offer. By giving artists working in Korea or overseas opportunities to amplify the artistic values to which they aspire and creating opportunities to bring various genres of art to the general public, the WMOCA has strived to support the advancement of the arts and culture in Gyeongju.
Now that we are racing toward the end of the tunnel that was the COVID- pandemic, I would like this exhibition to be a watershed moment for the museum’s efforts to encom- pass a broader spectrum of art genres and, thereby, become a place where visitors find inspiration that energizes their daily lives. Artist Jean Jullien, through his signature simple
lines and colors, creates witty depictions of daily life and social issues. Jullien engages in creative activity under the conviction that art must be simple enough in format to be understandable by all viewers. Refusing to be limited to two-dimensional illustrations or a particular subject matter, he works in genres including painting, video, sculpture, art objects, and fashion. Jullien held his first retrospective in Korea in “Jean Jullien: Then, There”, which is featured this year at the Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art under the title “Jean Jullien: Still, There” with more artworks
and a different theme. “Jean Jullien: Still, There” was developed from the sketchbooks Jullien filled with his creative ideas. Visitors will get the chance to observe how Jullien channeled his inspirations into concrete works of art as well as how he incorporates techniques from other mediums. The exhibition is made even more special with an exclusive section for Nicolas Jullien, the artist’s brother and artistic partner, through which visitors can see the process by which the Jullien brothers bring forth the powerful synergy of their artistic visions. The exhibition will also feature Korean
landscape paintings recently created by Jean Jullien. The exhibition has been arranged so that visitors can easily grasp the techniques that form the foundation of Jean Jullien’s artistic world and how they are employed. It is hoped that visitors, by learning about Jullien’s attitude on life and how it is reflected in his artwork in ways that resonate, have an opportunity to think about how they perceive themselves.

Paintings Like Jean Jullien’s drawings and sketches, many of his paintings are also inspired by
everyday life. Among them, nature, family and the sea are often used as a main motif. While the artist’s illustration style is humorous and satirical, his paintings tend towards the contemplative and tranquil. In contrast with a vast ocean view, human figures are expressed in a tiny and blurred form. In this way, his paintings make viewers focus on nature’s creations such as the music of waves and the motion of trees. *OTUBMMBUJPO 7JFX Le ciel de San Francisco 센프란시스코의하늘 acrylic gouache on canvas x cm, *OTUBMMBUJPO 7JFX *OTUBMMBUJPO 7JFX *OTUBMMBUJPO 7JFX The Aquarium 아쿠아리움 Acrylic
