Natural antioxidants from Schizandra chinensis stem enhance
anti-inflammatory activities with modulations of Nf-kB-
regulalted pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-induced Raw
264.7 cells

Schizandra chinensis seed is widely used as a popular food, spice, and traditional medicine, which contains several
bioactive substances with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Recently, Schizandra chinensis stem (SCS)
has been recently found to have anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities, but the therapeutic effects of SCS
have not yet been sufficiently investigated. In this study, the main phenolic compounds as antioxidants from SCS
were extracted using 70% ethanol and hot water. Phenolic contents in SCS were analyzed by UV-vis spectroscopy
and HPLC method. SCS showed good antioxidant activity on DPPPH assay in a dose-dependent manner. SCS also
showed good anti-inflammatory activities through suppression of Nf-kB-mediated pro-inflammatory cytokines, such
as TNF-α, IL-16, and IL-1β. Western blot analysis conducted downregulation of iNOS and COX-2 protein expression
in LPS-induced Raw 264.7 cells. Taken together, these results suggest that SCS could be used as functional food
ingredients for effective anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities.
