IDEAS IN DESIGN | MEZZANINES
[This image] The shape of the mezzanine’s window is incorporated
into the design choices in the living room: a collection of artwork, a
rectangular coffee table, and an antique dresser all reflect the bold
lines. [Top right] The bedroom is accessible via the hallway, so as not
to interrupt the living room. [Bottom right] A desk is attached to the
banister to take advantage of this extra partition
SCANDI COOL
Styled by Swede Lo Bjurulf and captured by photographer Stellan Herner, this pared-back project exemplifies the
theory that less is more when it comes to introducing a mezzanine to a lo y space. Every detail is carefully considered:
to compensate for the relatively short windows, the entire scheme is based on whitewashed walls and very pale wood,
bouncing all available light around the room and, crucially, into the upper-level bedroom, which would otherwise be at
risk of becoming a dark and gloomy space. To counteract the mezzanine’s unavoidably low ceiling, the flooring is glossy
and neutral, creating the illusion of a more roomy gallery. Equally, the bedding has been chosen to blend into the floor.
