And we make decisions about where to live, who to marry and even who our friends are
going to be, based on what we already believe. Again, that means we’re not listening to
each other. A conversation requires a balance between talking and listening, and some-
where along the way, we lost that balance.
In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. But the filament was too ex-
pensive for citizens to use, so the Lewis Latimer, who was Black, invented the filament,
which was cheap so that everyone can use it. When hearing this example, people who
trust white supremacy and have been thought that black people are lowbrow and igno-
rant can think again about racial discrimination and equalism and they can be changed.
Because it is a historical event.
Practicing is a hard thing, but like this, reflecting on the past cases of diversity
and embracing would be helpful for tolerance in modern diversity. Each small tolerance
can make and embrace the one bigger tolerance. Now, it is your turn. Try to look around
your school, country, society, and hear about whatever you are interested in. Communi-
cate with differences. Go beyond coexistence to tolerance. Thank you.
