MRS HOWARD ROOM
BY ROOM
The rather odd title of this book comes from the
fact that its author has several high-end furnishing
and home accessory shops, all called Mrs Howard,
in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. In this, her
second book, Phoebe Howard divulges some of
the decorating secrets that she uses to create her
distinctively Southern interiors, with a focus on a
dozen sumptuously dressed homes across the States.

VERANDA A PASSION
FOR LIVING
Readers of American glossy Veranda love the
magazine’s take on luxury living, and this book, by the
publication’s European editor Carolyn Englefield, won’t
let them down. She stays firmly on this side of the Pond
and takes us on a jaunt around spectacular homes
across the continent, including a castle in Belgium, a
Tuscan farmhouse, a French chateau and some lovely
th-century Swedish homes. The book’s subtitle calls
these ‘Houses of Inspiration’, but truly they’re just for
day-dreaming. , Hearst
SPIRIT OF PLACE
Charles MacLean is probably the world’s foremost
expert on whisky, and is always worth reading for his
knowledge of Scotland’s national drink. But for once
the great man’s words are only of secondary interest
– this book is all about the pictures. Lara Platman and
Allan MacDonald have captured fi y of the country’s
greatest distilleries, their workers and the surrounding
landscapes in a series of wonderfully evocative
photographs. One to peruse by the fireside with a
dram in hand. , Frances Lincoln
