SPOTLIGHT ON LIGHTING
space benefits from ample daylight, the pendant’s purpose will
change once again – Davey Lighting’s heavy 7380 pendants add
dark definition to a light and airy room (previous page, bottom
left). As pendants are often sculptural in nature, bear in mind that
your approach can be playful. “Avoid becoming obsessed with
symmetrical ceiling layouts,” says Sally Storey, design director of
John Cullen Lighting. “These can make a room feel like an office.
Symmetry does not matter, it is what you light that is important.”
Cluster together a group of similar lamps, such as those on Curiousa
& Curiousa’s wooden bar (above right), or contrasting pendants
(Bear & Bear have balanced the hues of their wooden lights
carefully, centre left) over tables or seating arrangements, to create
a new focus: there’s more than enough room in the spotlight.
