n the drama of lighting, consider the
pendant the central protagonist. The
high-flying hanging lamp will always be
the main event, thanks to its dominant
Iposition and size. But it still needs its
supporting cast: in a typical scheme, a selection
of table lights, spots and strip lighting. “Layering
of light is very important,” says Lorraine Cotterell
of Cotterell & Co. “Aim for a good mix of task,
ambient and decorative to create warmth in a
room. A single bulb in the middle of the space just
won’t be enough.”
Use the pendant as a starting point for
a overall theme and ambiance. Alessandro
Medini’s Deriva hanging lamp (above right) is a
stark, emergency-red statement in an otherwise
neutral space, more of a work of art than a
source of light. Work around its presence in the
room and top it up with subtle down-lighting
and hidden LED strips. Alternatively, if the
