DESIGN NEWS for the modern home
Good wood
This custom-designed
bureau is exactly what
your home office needs.
Baines & Fricker created
it in response to a special
commission for a portable
research lab. It comes in a
flight case on rollers, with
the front panel opening to
create the desk: practical
and robust, as well as super-
stylish. From .

HOUSE RULES
After the tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster devastated
his home, Japanese architect Yukihiro Akama bought a plot
of land in Yorkshire and built a family house on it. He also
created these beautiful one-off miniature houses from the
wood he collected with his kids in the forest around his new
home. www.theshopfloorproject.com
Chic shop
London isn’t short of a vintage shop or two, but Chase
& Sorensen, based in Hackney, manages to combine
both classic pieces and newer, design-led furniture.
There’s a definite Scandi edge to this store, with
Danish, Swedish and Norwegian products such as this
shelf from Copenhagen-based Frama Studio, sitting
comfortably alongside vintage items from the likes of
Hans J Wegner. From . www.chaseandsorensen.com
Take ten
When Hella Jongerius created the Polder sofa
for Vitra back in 2005, it became an instant
classic. Ten years on, the piece has been updated,
in an array of new colours and with specially
formulated fabrics that Jongerius designed to
work in harmony with the refined shape and feel
of the furniture. From . www.vitra.com
