proposals, and Marcus Lee (then at FLACQ) won this competition, and he in turn approached
Cameron Webster Architects to help deliver the building from the original design concept.
“The overall strategy was there but we worked on the details to take the project forward to the
planning stage,” says Cameron. “In the event this was straightforward, but there was an issue with bats
– bat droppings were found during a survey, which meant that demolitions could only be done at a
certain time of the year. We also had to make provision for the creatures to roost.”
Essentially, the scheme of the steading involves a courtyard around which is arranged the new
main house as one wing. Pivoting around at a right angle from the house’s main entrance, a series of
connecting spaces (containing a laundry room, boiler room, carport and games room) runs all the way
up the western flank of the development. A measure of its length is that it features a slatted screen to the
courtyard with 46 individual double-glazed units.
Finally, it meets the retained steading cottage at the far corner. “If just one or two members of the
