ARCHITECTURE
Looking through the new extension to the sunny back
garden. The high-level window lets light flow through the
space all day long. The whitewashed engineered oak boards
were supplied by Floors U
a rain-screen cladding. The joints are open between one board and the
next, with a waterproof membrane sitting behind the timber. This stops
water getting into the building, but air can still pass through the gaps so
the building can breathe.”
The new roof, which is finished with a Sarnafil membrane, echoes
the angles of the existing roofs, rising to a high point on the south-
western corner.
The internal finishes to the new extension are as simple as can be,
with white painted walls and engineered oak floors. No additional
services such as underfloor heating or rewiring were required (the budget
was very tight). It is purely about space – creating it and connecting it.
And as such has been something of a revelation to the Lawsons.
“I love the free-flowing feel of the space,” says Sarah. “And now that
we’ve created the dining area at the heart of the new open-plan area, it
means we can see all of the living spaces and garden, so we can sit and
relax and keep an eye on the kids, wherever they are. It looks beautiful
but it’s also so practical. It’s a great social space.”
