PLANS
CARLO SCARPA
Richard Murphy has devoted much of his
life to the study of one of his heroes, the
Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, so much so
that he is considered to be an academic
authority on the subject. His home
celebrates some of Scarpa’s hallmarks.
The roof garden is the biggest homage;
Murphy has recreated the garden at the
Querini Stampalia Foundation in Venice.
The garden has Japanese influences, and
materials, particularly water, are central
to how this decorative space works.
SIR JOHN SOANE
Soane was known as a ‘master of space
and light’ and is another of Murphy’s
architectural heroes. He has adopted
some of Soane’s touches in his own
home, such as using mirrors and moving
features to create the illusion of greater
space and also to introduce elements of
play. At the foot of the main staircase, for
example, there is a mirror that appears
to have no perimeter because the
magazines lining the adjacent shelves
take the edges away, making it appear to
be one continuous corridor, and bigger
than the actual space.
