CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE SPACE? This 15th-century monastery in
Lincoln has undergone numerous extensions and alterations over the
years, and makes an unusual home for my clients and their two teenage
children. This bathroom, which is used by the lady of the house and
occasionally by guests, hadn’t been touched since the Eighties and was
in dire need of an update. We ripped out everything and started afresh.
HOW DID YOU PLAN THE LAYOUT? The square room has a generous
alcove in one corner, where we installed a spacious walk-in shower with
a framed and panelled entrance that turns it into a separate room. We
placed the bath between the two windows, with the WC at one end and
the television at the other. On the longest wall opposite the bath we
added a vanity unit with a grand framed mirror above. It feels very
spacious and all the fttings have been scaled to suit the high ceilings.
WAS IT EASY TO INSTALL THE BATH? As the free-standing bath is the
focal point of the room, it needed to have a prominent position away
from the walls. Fortunately, the direction of the foor joists allowed us
to run new pipes under the fooring during the construction stage. We
chose a double-ended bath for its comfort and elegance and designed
a solid tap plinth behind it, which is a neater option than foor-standing
taps. The plinth provides somewhere to place toiletries and perhaps a
drink while in the bath. We also ftted a small radiator on the back, so
that a nice warm towel is always to hand.
TELL US ABOUT THE MATERIALS AND COLOURS. Aiming for a mix of
romance and faded glamour, we opted for a very natural palette for the
furniture, walls and ceiling. We then built this up with more luxurious
layers, including mosaic wall tiles and quartz composite fooring that
is designed to emulate natural marble but is far more resilient. We
broke up the expanse of cabinetry by using a shimmering vinyl that
is veneered onto the panels of the doors.
HOW DID YOU DRESS THE SPACE? We asked Jamie Hempsall Interior
Design to add the fnishing touches, such as the window treatments and
crystal lighting. The heavy, high-quality embroidered material used for feAture Linda CLayton PhotogrAPh darren Chung
the curtains has a cocooning effect and also adds a layer of insulation to
the large sash windows, while the crystal bead trim makes them more
feminine and complements the sparkle of the mosaics and lighting. l
