Can you tell us about the projeCt? This is a new property in
Windsor built in the Queen Anne style. We joined the project at the
initial construction stage, so we were able to specify all of the interior
architecture, including doors, freplaces, foors and coffered ceilings.
The living room is one of a series of rooms that fow into each other,
starting with a conservatory, followed by this living space, a more
formal drawing room and a dining room at the far end of the house.
DiD the arrangement of rooms DiCtate your approaCh to the
sChemes? The layout meant that it was important to create a sense of
fow between the spaces, but it was also crucial that each room had its
own identity, so that they didn’t all merge into one. The adjoining drawing
room, which is part of the grand hall, has a double-height ceiling and
marble foor. I felt that the living room needed to be more informal and
intimate, hence the choice of a deep blue-grey silk for the walls and a
dark-stained timber foor. The moody tones bring cosiness to the space,
while the silk wall treatment helps soften the acoustics.
What about the layout of the furniture? I felt that this room
called for a strong sense of symmetry. With double doors on two sides
and French doors on a third, it was important that the furnishings
anchored the space to help defne it. The freplace provided a focal
point on which I could centre a rug and two facing sofas, while a pair
of early-20th century armchairs completes the seating arrangement.
The pieces fanking the doors – metal and glass shelving units and
black-and-white paintings – reinforce the feeling of balance.
Can you tell us about the sliDing Doors? The electrically
operated doors slide in and out of the walls at the push of a button, so
that the room can be open-plan or become a more enclosed, intimate
space. For the fnish, we chose a high-gloss lacquer in a rich walnut
tone, which adds a luxurious feel. The grand piano and the frames of the
armchairs provide further glossy accents, which give a nice contrast to
the matt linen of the sofas and geometric print of the cushions.
What about the lighting? The ceiling’s coffered design incorporates feature RACHEL LEEDHAM PhotograPh RAY MAIN
recessed lighting, which offers a warm wash of light and helps to
emphasise the generous proportions of the room. To this we added an
elegant chandelier, which is matched by an identical piece in the dining
room, and a pair of lamps positioned on a table behind the sofa.
