the 1970s and winning numerous international awards for his
design work. He also designed his family home, the White House,
in Alveston, which was built in 1962 by his friend the architect
Patrick Guest. The house itself was an exercise in modern design;
it featured underfloor heating, double-glazing and lighting
designed by Welch. Alice recalls: “He was an essentially quiet,
thoughtful man but he had many friends, and our house was
always filled with the sound of Mozart.”
Following their father’s death in 2000, Alice and Rupert now
run the company, following the principles and design tenets that
Welch spent his lifetime perfecting.
