The therapeutic potentials of Scutellaria Baicalensis Georgi
on cognitive impairment after Stroke in the MCAO
mouse model

Stroke is a primary debilitating disease in adults, occurring in 15 million individuals each year and causing high
mortality and disability rates. The latest estimate revealed that stroke is currently the second leading cause of death
worldwide. Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI), one of the major complications after stroke, is frequently
underdiagnosed. However, stroke has been reported to increase the risk of cognitive impairment by at least five to
eight times. This study is to identify the therapeutic effect of Scutellaria Baicalensis Georgi (KMTT1) used in
traditional medicine using animal models, especially on cognitive impairment. At 3 weeks after the KMTT1 was
treated 5 times by P.O, behavioral experiments (rotarod test, open field test, and passive avoidance test were
conducted. We confirmed that the MCAO- KMTT1 model had a higher survival rate than the MCAO-Vehicle model,
and the modified neurological severity score (mNSS) was also higher. In the rotarod test and open field test, the
KMTT1-treated group showed the improvement of motor function in MCAO mice. In addition, the KMTT1-treated
group showed the recovery of cognitive impairment in MCAO mice in the passive avoidance test. We suggest that
KMTT1 has therapeutic effects for post-stroke cognitive impairment.
