As the COVID-19 diffused widespread, wearing masks
now become an essential part of our daily life. However, did
you recognize that the mask saving lives around the world
could threaten the lives of another living creature? According
to the American Chemical Society, The average amount of
global mask waste reaches about 129 billion every month. In
addition, since masks take about 300 to 400 years to
completely decompose under the ground, they may turn into
negative things choking many creatures and the environment
if they are not discarded properly.
Recently, used masks are not properly discarded, causing
many problems. Many marine animals, including turtles,
mistake masks for food and eat them. Also, they often die
from being bound in a mask and unable to swim. We made
posters to alert people to the impact of incorrect mask
disposal on animals. This poster depicts a turtle running away
from a mask. This conveys the fact that unauthorized dumping
masks in the sea threaten marine animals like nets.
Therefore, the responsibility given to humans is growing.
Recently, the 'Cutting Mask Strap' campaign has spread in
Korea through SNS. According to the correct disposal
guidelines guided by the Ministry of Environment, the mask
should be grabbed and folded inward, then tied with a strap
and put in a standard plastic garbage bag. Just as one small
act produces a great result, we all have to cut off the shackles
of the masks that tie their ankles. Thank you.
